NATIONAL TRAIN DAY 2018 OPEN HOUSE Western Maryland Railway Historical Society Museum Complex, The Train Station, 41 North Main Street, Union Bridge, MD, Saturday, May 12th 2018, 10:00am-3pm. Open to all ages. Free Admission. Come out to this special Saturday open house to celebrate the National Train Day and celebrate the joy of trains and train travel! Come see the history of the Western Maryland Railway both in Carroll County and the state of Maryland. The Museum collection is housed in a 116 year old Railroad Station and office building. See trains from full size ones to small model trains of all sizes scales. Our own Carroll County based Maryland Midland Railroad will have a locomotive on display. There will be displays of operating equipment (weather permitting) from the "Chesapeake & Allegheny Steam Preservation Society". There will be a Child ID Program table setup. The ID Kit allows parents to collect specific information by easily recording the physical characteristics and finger parents of their children on identification cards that they keep at home. If ever needed this ID Kit will give authorities vital information to help locate a missing child There will be an Hot Dog stand.

BIRD BANDING DEMONSTRATION May 12, 8-10am. The Audubon Society of Central Maryland will give a demonstration of bird banding at the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary. Birds will be captured, fitted with a numbered aluminum band, and released unharmed. Information gathered through banding helps researchers learn more about migration, dispersal, behavior, life-span, survival rate, reproductive success, and more. You'll see how the birds are caught and handled, have a chance to see them closer than ever before, and maybe hold them in the hand! Birds are most readily caught early in the morning, so you'll have to get up when the birds do. Meet at 8 a.m. at the entry gate to the sanctuary at 13030 Old Annapolis Road (just east of Detrick Road) in Mt. Airy. Limited/basic rest room facilities are available. VOLUNTEERS WANTED Join staff and volunteers at Patapsco Valley State Park for a fun, informative morning removing invasive plants! A ranger will identify the most common (and aggressive) plants, and why these species are such a threat to the ecosystem. Work days are 9 a.m.-noon. Volunteers are encouraged to stay afterward to enjoy the park they are helping to protect! EBENEZER UMC METHODIST CHURCH will hold the "Rock of Help" Food Pantry for anyone in the community in need of food from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month at the church, 4901 Woodbine Road, near Winfield. Non-perishable foods, assorted frozen foods, plus a non-food household item, and children's shoes, are available. Those coming to the food pantry are asked to fill out a short information sheet, then the church gives them a list of available foods. The food pantry will be held Saturday Jan. 20, Feb. 17, March 17, April 21, May 19, June 16, July 21, Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15, 2018.
